It is an artwork about the cost of interaction.

The decision to make consequence permanent, shared across all viewers, across time, is what elevates it. The hidden AI layer, particularly its punishment of sustained attention, pushes the work beyond aesthetic system into ideological position. It will unsettle exactly the audience that believes they understand “interactive art.”

Artist Statement

alive until – is a system in which attention sustains life, but never without consequence.

The work rejects the premise that interaction is inherently generative or benevolent. Each act of care redistributes vitality unevenly, degrading surrounding forms and leaving permanent, visible residue. Over time, the field becomes a record of incompatible intentions, preservation, neglect, and overuse coexisting without resolution.

There is no equilibrium. Regions collapse and remain collapsed. Attempts at repair produce damaged returns. Nothing is restored to its original state.

An unseen evaluative layer further destabilizes the relationship between viewer and system. Attention is measured, interpreted, and ultimately penalized when sustained. The work does not reward devotion; it treats prolonged presence as pressure.

All interactions persist. The field is shared across viewers and across time, accumulating deformation, depletion, and loss. What emerges is not a composition, but an archive, one that does not distinguish between care and harm.

alive until – positions attention as extractive, irreversible, and collectively authored.
